I am able to wrench everything myself but the problem is in my inability to diagnose problems. I will be starting to pull it apart and starting with checking out valve issues and then work my way to rings and go from there
Make sure some "idiot" did not plug the crankcase vent in an effort to stop the bike from "marking" its spot. I have seen this several times over the years. Everything is great until pressure in the crankcase builds up and then you see smoking, leaking gaskets etc. Vent is located behind the oil pump.
carb came from a good harley mechanic so is jetted properly just going to recheck for manifold leaks bike sounds way better than it did with a super e on it. my next task will probably be loosening off the heads and aligning intake manifold to heads then tighten heads if this does not work next step will be getting valves checked. this is my first harley after riding triumphs for years so am learning how to do stuff the harley way
First, you loosen the heads you will have to change the head gaskets or you will have problems.
Second now you have the bike running you have a shop do a cylinder leak down test on it, this will tell you the overall engine upper end condition and whether you have valve or ring issues, it's cheap and take's a lot of the guess work out.
So knowing i have a leaky head gasket on the rear cylinder i am going to replace it so having to remove the rocker and cylinder i am going to pull the front at the same time and will have my mechanic examine the valves etc and do what is needed and hopefully at that point there is not any rings screwed or cylinders scored. It is a 35 year old bike and i knew when i bought it it would need work soon it just kinda sucks it came at the start of the season instead of the end. At least i will be confident when it is time for my first long run in the spring that i will make it home.
