Every single time you ride, you're sharing the road with people who think that answering their text (while driving) is much more important than your life. Until we get serious and start treating texting, and cell phone talking (while driving) like we treat DUI, it will continue.
I'll tell ya, after taking some time off of riding...in my middle years, I came back to riding when cell phones were peaking. Totally different from decades ago pre-cell phones.
When I approach a stop...light/sign/whatever....I slow down way ahead of time, and I look to see what is behind me as I'm slowing. I stop well before I reach the car ahead of me...or light/line/sign....leaving plenty of room to lurch forward if I have to. (and I have used that quite a few times).
Also as I slow...I work my brakes to my tail light flashes...to catch the attention of who might be behind me. If nobody was behind me when I was stopping..and someone starts come up behind me as I'm still stopped...I work my brakes to my tail light is flashing...to catch their attention better. I keep my eyes on them in my rear views...and determine if they are properly slowing down, or not. I don't relax until they do properly stop behind me.
