I have an early style 4speed ratchet top transmission. I am having a problem the the kicker arm and not engaging to turn the engine over. I can kick it and kick it and it works fine. Then next time it just free spins. Took thE Kicker Side Cover Off AND it seems that the gear that is supposed to spring forward to catch the gear that allows the kicker to work does not catch all the time. Any suggestions?

3 things can cause it , the big spring behind the gear on the end of the mainshaft, the bushing in that gear galling up a bit and not sliding as it's supposed to or the teeth both on the ratchet & gear are worn out. And avoid the china crap like tommy said.
I didn't realize Baker (or anyone else for that matter) had them... was just giving the OP a possible source if he came up dry. I figured it was better than buying used.
Thanks for the info.
