An interesting Observation....
I did a 5300 mile solo trip this last July through 9 states in 12 days, with a several day layover in Fayetteville, AR. to visit my mom. I deliberately avoided large well known highways so that I could travel back roads through California, Nevada, Utah, Colorado, Kansas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona. I was treated much the same way and like you only had one instance where I felt "creeped out," which was in a small town where I stopped for gas in Oklahoma (not the same experience though). I found that folks were for the most part welcoming and friendly, curious and wistfully envious. It was a great experience and I look forward to another road trip through other states.
I do have a question though, do you think traveling solo may make you more approachable?

Also, I often say hello first, offer folks a place to sit in a busy restaurant if I am sitting at a table that has just me. I will also ask others if I can sit if the restaurant is busy and there is no place for me.
I will go over to people in pull overs and look outs and ask couples if they want me to take a picture of them. It is a guaranteed chat with most tourists, especially people from Asia.
Every morning in Palm Springs I sat with several bus drivers who where moving festival attendees from town to the site.
I am a pretty open person and enjoy meeting new people on the road.
It is a combination of all of it.
I said no, I am a Canadian, and actually, I was in the Anti War movement in Vancouver back in the late 60's and early 70'. She starts to laugh and and said "I will tell him to stop profiling people"
