i've run alot of Avons over the years and like them alot. about the same mileage as Dunlops. i've got friends who have run Metzlers and only get about half the mileage as i do.
I've switched from Dunlop to Mich Commander 2, I've had good luck out of the. Getting ready to purchase my 3rd set
Life if your tires is proper air pressure

Yes, good advice. Avon has a page on their website with recommended tire pressures, usually higher than Harly Dunlops. Good idea to check manufacturer's websites, they're not all the same, and even if you don't feel it in handling, it makes a difference in mileage to get the right pressure.
I really like running the Dunlop Elite 3s on my FLHRS. Been to Alaska and back and all over the Rockies and the west and southeast with them. They do handle better than the stock Dunlops and also get better mileage. Do well on wet pavement, steel bridge grates, tar snakes and wet wooden bridges in the Yukon and no problems on wet gravel to the Arctic circle. Just my personal experience.
My Deuce will need a new rear tire next spring. And I'm going to experiment with the Continental TKC 70 Dual Sport rear tire . This tire is new and has the best tread depth for a rear tire .
It will be replacing a matzler 880 that will have 15,000 miles on it .
Motorcycle superstore sells them and it has no bad reviews !

I don't think there is a "best" tire, you go for grip or mileage or a compromise of the two.On my Road King I prefer Dunlop (American Elite at the moment). On my shovelhead I like Avon and on the sporty I run some el cheap-o-s with a good grip but lousy mileage.
Longer life and better traction don't go hand in hand - the harder the tire compound the longer the life but the worse the road traction.
I run the Commander 11's, great road grip and ride - will they last as long as the stock Dunlop's - probably not but I'm okay with that
IMO there is no BEST tires... just one's that we like... I know I'll never buy another set of Michelin Commander II's... the mileage I got on the front tire was about 1/2 of what the OMG lops got, it was worn out at 12k, the same time the rear tire was and they both started cupping at 8k..
I went with some American Elites this last time I change fall of 15, didn't get to ride much this past summer due to health issues, but so far I am happy with them.
