Around here, police bikes are no longer used for "pursuit" work, and haven't been for many years. Harleys are too slow compared to modern cars and motorcycle pursuit is too dangerous. Motorcycles are pretty much relegated to escort and parade duty.
As far "who wants to ride a white motorcycle?" That would be me. For 24 years now.
Around here, HarleyD's are used with great success for intercity traffic enforcement. Even the CHP has some FL's in their fleet. (They also have 3 Cessna's too...)
I'm on my Road Glide Special commuting to work today and on the two lane side roads we have in my part of the county, fell in behind a pair of Fairfax County Motorcycle Patrolmen on their Harley's:
We're on Pohick Road, a very nice, windy two lane that is wooded on each side, Speed limit is 45 mph, with great curves on it. They accelerate to around 52 / 54 mph and I go with them. So we are three Harleys doing morning sweepers, They know I'm right behind them on my Road Glide, and I'm going to go the same speed they are - I don't think they are going to pull me over for keeping up - that would be an interesting conversation. Tell ya what, three harleys together sound like a WW2 vintage fighter place - its a good tone. We ride together for about 7 miles, and when they pull off we give each other a small wave.
As a former motor officer I can tell you without a doubt that ANY bike that served as a police motor has a diminished value in my eyes. How do you think motor officers get so good at riding? Nothing, and I mean nothing handles as good as a rental or a machine you don't have to pay to fix

California has traffic situations we don't have here. The NY State Police have Harleys, but I've never seen one of them being used for patrol work. Not saying it doesn't happen but it's rare here.
