Pressure from Dealers
At the first dealer, which is only a few miles down the road from me, I passed the Riding Academy, got my license, and bought my first ever bike from them, a 2015 Sporster 48. I told the sales guy I knew exactly what I wanted, what color, etc. The only thing he did was have me sit on a 883 and a Slim just so I could get a feel for size, weight, forward vs. mid controls, etc. He didn't pressure me in any way. But 6 months later, I'm in there to pick up a part, and my sales guy asks me if I'm ready to upgrade yet.
Fast forward 2 years. I'm looking to buy a Slim, the bike I've lusted over since 2012. All they have at the dealer is 2 Slim Ss in stock. I politely tell the same sales guy that I'd buy an S, but I don't like my color options, and I'm not ready to spend $20K on a bike. What I want is a '17 Slim in Red Iron Denim. So I ask when they are getting a Slim in (in any color) so I could test ride one. He asks the sales manager, and that guy says that they'll *probably* get one in, but they can't tell me when. Ok, guys, thanks... (Six months after that the dealership was under new ownership).
The second dealer is near my girlfriend's house, so I'm out riding on the 48, and I decide to stop in and see what they had. Not only did they have multiple Slims, they have a '17 in Red Iron Denim on the floor. So I'm poking around it, and a guy comes over, says hi, and we just start BS'ing for, like, 10 minutes. He's drinking a coffee, and I thought he was just some rider who wandered in like me, but as it turns out he's a sales guy, and we have a bunch of mutual friends. So I ask him if I could ask a bunch of questions, he says absolutely, and 3 hours later I roll out of there on my beautiful new Slim.
Honestly, I'm sure if varies a bit from dealership to dealership, sales person to sales person. But I CAN tell you who really starts to annoy me at dealerships: the moto clothes staff. Sweet Jesus, I can't look at a T-shirt without getting a 5 minute speech on who designs the back of their T-shirts, what's on sale, the new $700 jacket they just got in (when I'm wearing a Schott), blah blah blah...
If I want another bike, I'll go to another state. I wouldn't give them a dime.
