Hey,
so I recently had to change the ratchet pawl on a 2004 Ultra, it was my first time taking on the task. This being said I am confident in my skills but I do believe I have made a mistake, I can get the bike into first gear sometimes but it is certainly not a guarantee.
It seems the clutch on the bike is a little soft could this be the cause? Let me know if more detail of the steps I took would be helpful.
Not sure what you mean by the clutch being soft, but if it doesn't feel right the first thing to do would be to adjust the clutch and cable. Then see if it helps.
It is very easy to not get to the no free play when you do the clutch back off behind the derby cover if you put a too much play in the cable length before you start the adjustment on the clutch. Sound like however if the clutch is correct, you have a bent shift dog. Did you follow the service manual?
