Yep, we reap what we sow.

30 years ago it was no big deal as there werent that many bikes on the road. Now is a whole different story. HD, Honda, Yamahas, Susukis, doesnt matter, a lot of them are running straight pipes or rally loud systems. Yeah, I ran drag pipes on my sporties and FXRS and yes, did pay one ticket for a vehicle defect-no mufflers installed.

I run LSR Blackholes, just a tad louder than stock, both for personal reasons and also due to the village to my south enforcing the noise ordinance.

I don't know your ordinance, but in Chicago, the City has to prove (not beyond a reasonable doubt, but rather by a preponderance of the evidence) that you could be heard 75 feet, or is it yards away.

The officer can testify s/he knows the street lamps are X feet and there were Y number of lamps between the officer and your bike and he could hear you that far away.

Good luck.
Seventy five feet or yards? I live 5.5 miles from Interstate 10, and if neighborhood noise levels are low such as early mornings or evenings, I can sometimes hear Harley engines with straight pipeson the bloody freeway.
You probably can hear trucks also. Don't just pick on Harleys.
I wasn't picking on Harleys... I was referencing Harleys withstraight pipes, and sinceI've been around Harley Davidsons for40 years or so, Irecognize the unique sound they make.If a car or truck came boiling down the freeway with straight exhausts, I'm sure I'dhear them too under the same conditions.

Thankfully, most car and truck ownersdo not use straight pipes. But many Harley owners do, and that is the pointof my post. Consequently, we should not be surprised that the hammer is coming down.

God I wish that was the only thing we had to worry about withcars. I'm sort of going the other way on the loud pipes deal. I don't hammer mine in town, or rev it all to hell when I ride. I am not going to ride around worried if I am pissing people off anymore. If I do, it isn't on purpose. I run SE (the legal ones) and if someone gets mad, that too will pass. My problem with theseordinances is the targeted group. We are making somenoise, god forbid. Get the drunk driving phone jockeys off the road, then come for my pipes.Until then, pick on the blatant straight piping loud bikes, and let the others be. A good cop knows the difference. America has been a loud nation since day one.

No one is entitled to never ever be bothered by someone else in their day to day lives. That is just the way it is. We are too uptight as a nation. I don't like barking dogs, but I don't call the cops on them. It just isn't that big a deal to me. Guess I'm just more tolerant of others than they are of me. Has always been that way too. I don't have a fckem' attitude, but I think their inability to let the little **** go is pathetic. Life is too short to be crying about a bike going by your house with audible pipes. JMO.

Combine less complaints and more revenue you better believe every mom and pop town is going to jump on this band wagon right along with redlight cameras, and photoradar on highways. Get ready America the man wants even more cash and more control. How dare you think you can think.

Exactly! And since 98%(not from any study, but sounds about right... ) of bikers are white males, they're fair game. Who'd care if they got "profiled".

I reckon this is going to be the future of things... I just hope they target the gangbangers with their 'fart-in-a-barrel' megaphones and 'thumpa-thumpa' sound systems. Personally, I have nothing against quieting things down a bit out there just so long as one particular group (such as motorcycles) isn't targeted unfairly.
That would be racist and profiling if you targeted those offenders and the ACLU (American Criminal Liberties Union) would step in and defend them.

Well first off I would like to thank everybody for the opinions. I love the honesty. I see EVERYBODYS side of the story. But just let me finish by saying that, I am not a law breaker, I am a Tax payer, and the last ticket I got was 25 years ago, I am a professional (commercial airline pilot)making a honest living. Its not the price of the ticket, I could peel that money out of the back of my pocket at anytime. What bothered me was, the 45 mins. my buddies and myself where standing on the curb, (at noon time by the way) watching the Keystone cops preform there act on me and my bike, and they kept on waving through the Honda, and Yamaha cruisers with the LongShots and straight pipes, which just doddled through at idle, trying not to make to much noise with the heads down, and EVER harley was stopped. That just did not sit well with me! Hey, I like my my quiet times as well, but like someone said, I don't call the cops on everything thats pisses me off, I live with it. Yeah the kids with the 3 and a half inch booming mufflers scratch at my *** to, but you know what, there just kids, like all of us were, trying to impress there girlfriends to get laid!

Oh and by the way, this town we got stopped in, holds one of the biggest motorcycle rallies in Canada. Friday the 13th, mabe some of you have heard of it, they do have a website. The town of 6000 explodes to over 100,000 people every friday the 13th, bringing a big boast to there economy. This rally has been going on since 1984(23 yrs) and everone in Ontario knows about it. It would be really interesting to see, how many of the 6000people of Port Dover have been there 23 yrs?

I will never buy as much as a coffee in that town again!

And I still hate Cops! Yeah the goverment makes the laws, but it's the petty jack *** cops that chose to inforce them. Go catch the idiot that just robbed the old lady down the street!!

Wrong!
you are referring to a city noise ordinance that was orignally created for car stereos etc. Its 75 feet away and they could impound the car. However.....

(625 ILCS 5/12‑602) (from Ch. 95 1/2, par. 12‑602)
Sec. 12‑602. Mufflers, prevention of noise.
Every motor vehicle driven or operated upon the highways of this State shall at all times be equipped with an adequate muffler or exhaust system in constant operation and properly maintained to prevent any excessive or unusual noise. No such muffler or exhaust system shall be equipped with a cutout, bypass or similar device. No person shall modify the exhaust system of a motor vehicle in a manner which will amplify or increase the noise of such vehicle above that emitted by the muffler originally installed on the vehicle, and such original muffler shall comply with all the requirements of this Section.
(Source: P. A. 77‑37.)

Currently in IL they can write you a ticket for excessive noise for anything over stock. It's then up to you to prove you are legal. Under SAE test procedure J1169 the limit is 95db (20inches to rear at a 45 degree angle; engine RPM to be @ 3/4's rated HP) butIL law STILL states anything over original equipment so they can write it.

You'd have a fighting chance to lean on the SAE test to prove your innocence since ILCS has no test provsioned in it. But they are working on it.

You know I have always had the perception that loud pipes, throaty, rumbling or what ever you want to call them (cause noise is a subjective thing) was synonymous with bikers and Harleys specifically.

Never had this kind of problem on this scale until recently. Now we have all these "New wave bikers" that have problems with loud pipes. For many, its as much about performance as it is sound.

Its almost like some are trying to change what being a biker or riding a Harley has always been about and the lifestyle it has meant to many of us to suite their taste and desire of what they like.

But then again the minority has always had the loudest voice.

Just got a Violation for no mufflers on my bike. I have a set of Samson Straight fishtails on my 1990 FLH. We were just minding our own business, when right in front of us a road stop team. Pulled us over and got a $110 dollar ticket.Iwant to fight it, but want toknow first, am I going to waste my time, or has anybody else challenged the courts over this issue? Just to let you know, I reside in Ontario Canada, so if there are other Canadian's, or Americans that have any Idea's how to get out of this, let me know?

Thanks in advance.

I hate COPS....... and my best friend is a cop?

As far as I know, there must a method of measuring the decibles of your muffler to justify a charge that it's over a limit. I don't know how they can charge you by their 'opinion' of what is loud.

Cops don't make up these laws,.... They just enforce them (Traffic, Municipal, Federal, Provincial..whatever) ...I think that's their job ... Unless you are of the opinion that they should enforce only the "important laws". If you got a problem witha municipallaw like noise ordinances in your community... get your butt into city council meetings and do something about it...If it's not in your community and your just visiting another community ... Respect their laws, and no one gets hurt. Remember, ignorance of the law is no defence in court.
