Every once in a while find some empty parking lots and get in some figure 8s. Practice makes perfect... as the saying goes
I've got 2 schools at the end of my road. For a while there, every time I took a ride, I'd swing in, do a figure 8, and continue on my way. Even now, I'll swing in occasionally, and do a figure 8 or two for no particular reason. Never stop practicing the fundamentals!
After 39 years off of bikes I got back on 2.5 years ago. First thing I did was take the MSF - BRC. Arizona issues your full bike license once you complete the BRC, no test, written or driving involved. The best thing I learned was just how much I still had to learn.
Earlier this year I rode to San Diego and took the Advanced Rider Training{.com} - Advanced Rider Skills Course. Wow, what an amazing experience. They had us doing things most could not even imagine. Great course, awesome instructors that I would recommend to everyone.
Next year I will take the next level or perhaps even do a track course but in the mean time it's practice, practice and practice some more. For the record I am 65 and currently ride 15,000+ miles year {easier to do when you are retired}, and yes they can and did teach this old dog more than a few new tricks....Woof!
I already bought one about 6 weeks ago and have been doing short commutes to work on it. I've become pretty comfortable on it, but I've been taking my time with it and figured that before I get too crazy I need to take the course and get my endorsement. A little backwards, I know.
I bought a 2015 fat bob - not exactly a beater so I hope my luck doesn't run out.
You're not the only one to get used to the bike before getting the license.

I hadn't heard that. I knew only that the course could substitute for the test in some states, and might be required for younger riders, similar to the way driver's education is treated.
Congratulations, and you are right a 2015 Fat Bob is defiantly not exactly a beater. Stay safe by keeping your eyes open for trouble before it happens.
