Luckily I haven't needed any tows. Haven't had a breakdown that couldn't be fixed on the roadside or rode home. Closest I came was busting the clutch cable on the old Ironhead 12yrs or so ago. The green light Gods were smiling on me that day and It's not too hard to find the sweet spots to shift without a clutch.
My Buddy owns a bike shop, I know if I was within 100miles and called him 24/7 he would come get me, same as I would for him.
You get the basic Road America free with your HOG membership - $100 towards your tow, once per year. If you upgrade for $19.95/yr you get full coverage to the nearest dealer & unlimited number of service calls per year.
Yesterday (Sunday) I snapped the throttle cable at the grip 22 miles from home and 14 miles from nearest dealer. Decided to use HOG Roadside Assistance for the 1st time since 2003. She advised I get $100 credit and would call back with out of pocket quote. In the mean time, I called the dealer and was told if I don't get the bike delivered by 3p that I'd have to wait til Tuesday to drop off. This was a lame response but that's another story. HOG Roadside Assistance called back and advised my out of pocket expense for the 14 mile tow would be $300 after my $100 credit!!! What a ripoff. I called AAA and while I had removed my bike from coverage they quoted $75 for the hook up and $5 per mile. My total towed home was $175, painful but way less than HOG quoted. Needless to say I will be re-instating the bike to my AAA policy and cancelling HOG membership. Lesson learned.
AMA is what you should get. They will not jack you around.
