Man... not that I'd ever do this for fear of getting caught and receiving a massive beat down, BUT... I have always thought when passing a huge crew (~20 bikes or so) and I'm holding my hand out waving... how awesomely hilarious it would be to just hold out a middle finger the whole way down the line.
But, alas, there is that @ss kicking to worry about...
I think it could be unsafe...we should replace the "Wave" with the "Bird"...my thoughts:
1. Every rider you flip the bird to will attempt to flip you back.
2. When entering an intersection, a low wave might be considered a left turn signal causing the guy opposite you to think you are turning left. Probably a real cause for those left turn accidents.
3. When entering a intersection, flipping the bird, people will notice. If you have cruise control, you can flip two birds. Everyone understands what the "bird" means...hell, don't have to worry about immigrants who don't speak english...even they understand this universal sign language. I think going thru an intersection saying, basically, F*ck You, is an attention getter adding to your own personal safety.
4. The higher you display the "bird", the safer your are...people notice. Guys with the really tall apehangers have a distinct advantage here...just raise a couple fingers (one on each hand).
5. Initially, you might think that this can add problems...perhaps 4 or 5 guys that got the new 'flip' will turn around a chase you. This improves your riding skills...and adds to safety...8 or 10 headlights are more noticeable than one. I think if, in concept, this catches on, we will all be safer.
6. Finally, with the bird replacing the wave, we will no longer be subjected to posts about the 'wave'.
OH nononononononononononononono!! None of this "bird" crap! Tee hee. Oh no! CAUSE I'M GONNA WWWWWWWWWAAAAAAAAAAVVVVVVVVVVEEEEEEE! I'M GONNA WAVE TILL I PUKE! DO YOU GODDAMN WELL HEAR ME?
