I used to ride with a reflective vest. Then I noticed that on an mc with a tour pack the size of our Harley's, about the only thing visible at night is the riders helmet. One would have to be extremely tall for the full effect of a reflective vest to be seen. I do carry one should I have to stop roadside at night.
I made the same argument about having to wear a reflective belt on an Army base. I wore it without protest but I did scratch my head about their logic. They say it's so you can be seen better from the side. Makes sense I guess.
Over time, I have noticed more and more Harley riders beginning to wear proper safety gear. Not sure if it's the rising accident rates, the fear of inattentive drivers on cellphones, or just a gradual evolution of cultural norms.
Probably 50 percent of the Harley riders I encounter nowadays are wearing full face helmets and decent gear, including some reflective gear. So I would say those ridiculous old-school attitudes are slowly changing.
Some days I wear a helmet, full leather, reflective clothing.....some days, shorts flip-flops and sunglasses.....nothing wrong with minimizing chances of an accidents and trying to reduce injuries if one occurs, but honestly if you are truly safety conscious, ought to drive a car.....no less safe way to travel the on a motorcycle.....it's just worth the risk, plus there is nobody that depends on me other then leaches living off my tax dollars.

Only if the fool driving next to you turns their head before changing lanes. Besides which, I sure as hell don't remember any 4 Lane roads at either MCRD, SD or Pendleton. (grins)
Not for me but if it makes you feel safer, by all means wear it. Who cares what someone thinks?
Im of the belief that the people that see you, usually will, the ones that are tuned right out and/or texting won't EVER see you, no matter how much reflective gear you have on. If a fire truck with lights and sirens blasting can't get some people's attention, what chance do we have on bikes? Wear what makes ya happy and keep your head on a swivel

I'm convinced the fossil in a Buick who almost took me out a few months ago wouldn't have seen me even if I was on fire.
