I wear a high visibility (mesh) vest something like 90% of the time - I work on a military post and generally they require some kind of high visibility stuff.. although they change the policy rules, I suppose to justify work for senior commanders. I think now it says at night its required but I quit paying attention. I generally just leave it on my riding jacket so there really is no additional effort in putting it on It also has a well placed pocket for my ID access since I get "carded" to get through the gate.

I got a textile riding jacket for xmas last year. Looks like a glow stick. As all the Florida bashers have mentioned ad nauseum we have traffic so I figure what the heck.
Sets me apart from all the weekend pirates lol.
I wear brown boots too.

The only time I wear an orange safety vest is when I'm deer hunting during rifle season. I see no problem with people wearing them but I question if they are effective, I see people wearing them also involved in accidents. Heck, I once seen a police car merge into the side of a fire truck and they both had lights going.

I wouldn't worry too much about what people say. The asshat making fun of the vest is no different than an asshat who makes fun of someone in leather and doo rag. Makes them feel better about theirself. Maybe they need it.

My son in law is a CDL driver and his company requires everyone to wear the safety yellow/refelective vest on top of the company issued t-shirt or sweat-shirt. He gets off work and swings by my house since I live fairly close to where he works and every time he gets out of his fox body mustang wearing that thing I laugh my *** off at him. He refuses to take the thing off. I laugh harder every time. He cares not. Its a game we play. So...no...I am not going to wear one fo fear that my rib poking would not be nearly as effective.

I also make fun of his mustang since I drive a chevy. Secretly thinking about buying the neighbor's fox body this weekend so I can restore it this winter. Please don't tell.

The one time I was hit, I was wearing my vest.
Two things to consider about safety equipment is that they don't always prevent accidents and usually when they work nobody knows. When it doesn't help people can point out that they were hit while wearing a vest, their scooter had many extra red lights, their headlight was beaming brightly, etc.. The most obvious example of this is helmets. Some people die from, or suffer, head injuries while wearing helmets.

But helmets, lights, etc. all have in common that nobody can know how many accidents/injuries they prevented. It comes down to priorities. Using a possibly unneeded safety feature? Or suffering the consequences of a possibly preventable accident/injury?

That's a good point.

I rode home last night. I was not wearing any safety equipment beyond a helmet and gloves. I did not get hit. Therefore, ergot, ie...safety vest do not help?

Not if you don't wear them. They wouldn't help anyway in some situations. I don't wear safety vests either but the fact that I see them makes me think that some cage drivers also see them and react accordingly. It only takes one event to justify it's use?

Another consideration is that what might possibly be a minor fender bender type incident may be a major factor in a motorcycle rider's life? As I previously posted it is a matter of priorities.
