Default Retail Book Value Trade

Has anyone actually got their trade in for the actual Retail book value? Is this more of a bait and switch type deal? Im guessing to get full retail book value they make up the loss by not being able to negotiate on setup dealer fees. Let me know if anyone has done this if not, I might waste a few hours and see what happens.

The Local Dealership. Not really local but it's House of Thunder in Morgan Hill that is having a promo.

I got 1.8k more than book when trading in my Sportster, and was able to negotiate a small amount off my FXDLS. I'm sure they made their money off me which easily could have been prep or freight fees or somewhere my feeble mind cant comprehend. Shop around and see who wants your business more.

Waste a salemans time? pshh...they have all day with nothing to do but b.s.
As far as getting retail for your bike, doubtful, they make money on resale. Look at the used bike prices they have on the floor, then look at nada prices for those bikes. Theyre marked up at least 2k from retail. Check the internet for sold prices on your bike and show the saleman. Use as a negotiation tool and plan on spending a day there.
Going to a dealer is like what they say in the song Hotel California..."you can check out any time you like, but you can never leave" (until you buy a bike)

Only way you'll ever get a decent idea is to negotiate a new bike FINAL price and then let them know that you have a bike you've decided to trade in too. Otherwise, it all gets magically worked into a deal and you don't know what you have.

I've done this twice on vehicles- they end up hating it, but at least you know whether you should trade in or sell yourself.

I will jump in one this one.
I talked to my local dealers about a deal earlier in the summer.
About the time the new bikes show was aired I sent out an email to most of the dealer in WA & 1 in OR (on the wet side).
Layed out what I wanted and what I had.
About 3/4’s of them got back to me.
I told them where I was as far as price goes.
Some of the prices were a joke, some were close.

The wife and I were on the way back home (went to Seattle).
She said lets stop and see what they will offer
Anyhow I said hi to the sales guy that has been there for years...
I told him I had a coupe dealers willing to sell me one for a decent price.
Of course he said what if we beat it, I said go for it.

They did anyhow I got the bike I wanted and got the price I wanted for my trade.

To me it was worth it, but it took work to get there.
So I bit and got my first new bike.

Look at dealers same as casinos, it's always slanted toward the house no matter the promo or specials. Make your mind up what you can live with price wise for a new one, tell them to pound sand on the prep fee's ( they'll cut those by half if not drop it ) and do a little homework to see what your present ride is worth on the streets here in the bay area not the booklet nonsense and then go waste a sales guys time.

The only number to be concerned with is the number on the bottom line. Many dealers are offering $4K-5K off of some new models. They can afford to give you Retail+ on a msrp trade.

The sales model is simple...make a few, very few dollars on the sale of new bike....$1000-2000....5-10%. That’s at retail. A $25k 2018 RG Special...at retail, make about 10% margin. Not a lot of money when you are paying $150-300 in commission, lights...etc. The trade represents another profit vehicle to make up for poor margins on the new bike. Your 2015 Road King. Trades for roughly $12-14k...depending on color, condition, miles, mods, records...etc... RK are desirable so they want it back.... They will sell for 14-17k....Retail book value is different in every source you look at. Book value, dealer set up...they are all just “roughly right” values...mean almost nothing.......It’s January....you will get the bets deal on both ends RIGHT NOW. I have bought 6 new HD cycles in my life...all in Dec or Jan. THey want to move a bike in Jan...no one is buying with 8 inches of snow on the ground. Good Luck!
