I'm retiring my '90 FXRS. Has been a great bike around town and out to California. I'm torn between a Wide Glide and Softail Custom. I've talked to owners of both who love'm. I've thought about the "pros/cons" of both but nothing really takes over the top for either. Would like to hear opinions of others. I will continue to ride around town and local 2-laners as well as out on the road.
Thanks for your thoughts.
Haven't ridden a newer model Wideglide. I rode a 98 Glide until this past November when I got my Custom. For me, there is no comparison. The Custom has a way better ride and feel. For me at least. Have you test rode either one? Might give that a shot before making your decision.
Its according what kind of ride yer looking for. I'm a Dyna person myself. The Dyna Wide Glide is a Ridable bike. It's streached out a little more and rides 2 up real good. It has more rake on it too.
The 07 Wide Glide has really been inproved in the frame and suspension. I really like the 6 speed transmisson and the 96cu motor.I got mine last july and it has 8000 miles on it.
Hope you realize 07 is the last year for the Wide Glide too. I was at a dealership 2 weeks ago and they had like 4 wide glides, came back in a week and they were all gone. If yer still not convinced go rent a 07 Wide Glide. The 1st thing to do to one is change the seat to a full pillow top seat too.
Thats a tough question..I like the looks of both bikes, butI cant provide any input abou the new ones. I test rode a Custom years ago, before buying my first Dyna('95 Convertible). It was larger but didnt feel much different than my Sportster, still solid mount so it had some vibration that I didnt care for on long trips. The new ones are balanced, so this is supposed to be much better. I like the looks of both bikes, but now I'm riding my second Dyna('94 Wide Glide) because I like the ride and feel, looks great too(IMO)..
I totally agree that you need to try both before buying. Your FXR is rubber mounted and the bike Harley replaced with the Dyna. So, if you like the FXR, the Dyna might be a direct replacement(update)..
I've had the chance to ride both on a couple of demo-days.
I liked the Softail Custom better.
They're both pretty sweet though.
I don't have any facts to back-up my picking the Custom over the Wide Glide.
It is all a matter of preference and comfort.
I liked the stock seat and riding position a little better on the Custom.
If I had to choose, it would be the Softail Custom.
However, this being the last year of the Wide Glide, this may effect your choice along with preference and comfort.
Side story:
I was chewing the rag with the Harley Rep in charge of the last demo ride I attended. As we were commenting on the different models I'd ridden, without any prompting from me, he says something like, "I love the Softail Custom over any of these bikes."
Apparently, the bikes and HD truck stay at the dealer over the weekend of the demo-rides andthe HD Repjust takes one of the demo bikes back and forth to his hotel. The guy told me he always uses the Custom.
Not a bad endorsement from a guy who was NOT selling me a bike, had great knowledge of the HD products, and could choose from 1 of about 8 really nice HD's.
The Dyna has always seemed lighter and nimbler in the back because of the weight and configuration of the swing arm. If you want a Wide Glide better get it now. I here that '07 will be the last year.
Don't get rid of your FXR. You will find as time goes on that it has a better ride and handling than the Softail or the Dyna.
