Default Best sounding potato

Hi all,
I have been a classic car nut all my life, but recently discovered the thundering reality about what freedom on the road really is about.
For the past few weeks I've been reading more about Harleys than about my lectures, and I am looking forward to buying a Harley in the next couple of years.
I am somewhat green when it comes to the classic engines, although I am familiar with their timeline.
How can you precisely recognize a classic engine by it's sound?
Personally, I find the Evo and Shovelhead the best sounding with their iconic potato. But I am having a hard time being able to distinguish between them....
Also, what is the best sounding engine to you personally, and why?

Looking forward to becoming part of this great community!

The valve covers are the quickest way. The Evos will have full rectangular valve cover and the shovel valve cover has a big "u" cut out in the center of the cover.

Back in high school, during lunch, I looked up just in time to see a foil-wrapped baked potato flying across the cafeteria. It hit one of the biggest ******** (besides me) in school right in the middle of his face as if it was a competition.

The sound that the potato made when it exploded was, to this day, the best sounding potato I’ve ever heard.

Welcome to the Jungle. The best way to tell what engine is in a bike is to listen to the ******* in the seat. Even a negative response will be significant.

Visually, the rocker box and nose cones are dead giveaways. There are many other visual differences but those two are the easiest to spot.

Personally, I like the way a pan head engine looks. I like the way a shovelhead sounds. I like the Evolution the best overall. I find a vrod with its revolution engine a blast to ride and makes me feel young again. Twin Cams never did it for me. I think an M8 powered bike would be great on a long trip, although in stock form the exhaust note leaves a lot to be desired.

HD was doing a lot of things right in the 90’s, both engine wise and overall bike styling.

Give me a well tuned carbureted Evo any day and I’ll be happier than a pig in ****.

Everybody has their own preferences and reasons for what they like and that’s a very good thing. Otherwise we would all be stuck with plain vanilla.
