Default HD Petcock Problem

New HD owner wants to know which end of the petcock lever is the pointer. Does the handle point to the position (i.e. "cover" it)?

Or does the opposite end of the handle point to the position?

I can read the positions (On, Off, Res), I just don't know how which way the lever points.

Look at it close, on my Sportster its has a line or groove on one end and thats the "pointer" so to speak... See the pic, its on the right side and its in the off position.

Sisitruc is correct. His photo show's the valve in the "off" position.

What you never want to discover is that you're out of gas with the petcock set to RES !

my old heritage had an arrow on the lever, that would point to whatever position you wanted it in

Yeah mine above or others like it that have some kind of mark on them kind of make it a no brainer... once you notice there’s a mark on them lol I have had some that weren’t marked, but within a couple minutes, if you thought about it you could figure it out. None of the ones that I’ve had would spin all the way around. The one above will only spin tail up, tail down, or tail left for instance... so because the off position is to the right and the tail will not turn to that side that tells you which end is has to be the “pointer” end. But it also cold be as simple too as what JohnMN said, the “handle” end that you grip is the tail end and the other end is the pointer end, I honestly just have never noticed if that was always or even generally true.. I’ve always just check it the other way if there was no mark on it.
