It is sad MrFreeze. It is an extremely unfortunate result of over management. Enviro-zealots just can't seem to see the forest for the trees.
I am 100% behind conservation, but there are way too many trees per acre in a lot of areas. In some areas 5 times as dense as it would be in nature. Natural fires can't burn because of people living in the area, as well as "protecting" endangered species. The result of the extra fuel is fires burn way hotter and spread much faster.
Lots of good folks lost everything. Several firefighters lost their lives.
On a positive note, the biggest fires in Nor Cal are approaching full containment, and air is beginning to clear.
I am still hoping in September to go on a ride thru the redwoods, I love riding in Humboldt and Mendocino counties. as you said the main cause of these ferocious fires is govt mismanagement and incompetence.
It's absolutely a "must do" ride. Hwy 1 North of SF is very nice. Not a bunch of traffic early in the day. It has some heinous twisties at the north end before you hit the junction at 101. On that there is "Avenue of the Giants." There's a side road where the tree you can drive through is located.
Inland from Mendo is some lovely roads.
Yep. You must do it, one day.....or several days!
I did solo ride up there a couple years ago from Moss Landing to Crescent City. It would have been much better with a riding partner.
