Battery Maintainers
Time to go online and purchase a new one.
Yeah, I know that a lot of people won't use a tender even in the winter saying it isn't good for the battery or the bike. For those folks, I say do what you like, it's your bike and we all live and learn from our achievements and our mistakes.
I had seen a bunch of propaganda (ads and the like) for different chargers/maintainers that were used on high end autos and thought about how my tender acted when I unplugged and reenergized it, I feel sure that if the battery voltage dropped enough, the tender would have caught it...I don't know how low the voltage has to drop before the charger kicks in though.
I have had three batteries in my 06 Dyna...The first was changed out after 6 years because I was going on a trip and wanted to be sure the bike and battery were up for the miles. The replacement battery lasted 2 years and yes, if it was in the garage, it was on a tender. I again changed out the battery and this time I bought the new tender that I had been reading about, So the current battery is 4 years old in that bike and still seems to be strong. After a day out riding, it still reads full when I plug it back into the tender. Like I said before, I think part of that is because there are only 2 tungsten bulbs on the bike and the rest are LEDs including the headlight.
My Road Glide special still has the original battery and it also shows fully charged when I plug it back in the tender and is less than 2 years old. Time will tell about that battery on my tender but I don't think HD (Decka) batteries are known for long life. When it dies, I will replace it with a better one.
My charger/ maintainers are the CTEK US5500. There are bad reviews on Amazon about them but I have never had a moments problem with either of them. They are a 4 step charger and can charge a battery even in a below freezing situation.
They also make a charger for lithium ion batteries and at max output this charger will put out 7 amps.
Just trying to share my experience with chargers/maintainers.
