I was riding through a residential section of Comfort, TX a couple of days ago. I was on my 2017 CVO Ultra Limited. The Sun hadn't set, but was very low on the horizon. The light was dimming, and there were very long shadows cast across the street from the trees and houses on the West side. I was probably going about 30 mph. Suddenly, without any warning whatsoever, I heard a loud "Crack!" sound, accompanied by a brilliant flash of light that looked like it was right where the windscreen meets the fairing on the extreme left side. The flash was attended by some instantaneous streamers of light, which faded immediately. It was so loud, and so bright, that I just about jumped out of my skin!
My first thought was an electrical problem. The bike was continuing to operate properly, and I scanned the control panel looking for any sign of trouble. Nothing. Then, I thought I might have been hit by something. So, as soon as I got out of the shadows, I examined the bike. I found no damage, and no sign of impact or scorch marks. There wasn't so much as a scratch on the bike or windscreen.
The only thing I found was evidence of bug juice on the windscreen at the same location where I saw the flash. But, I can't say for sure when I hit that bug. And, it looked like a high speed bug splatter, so I'm doubting that it came from a 30 mph impact.
Have any of you had a similar experience? Are there bugs out there that cause an electrical type discharge when they hit the bike? Do you think I was hit by some sort of pyrotechnic projectile shot at me as I rode down the street? I do remember as a kid back in the late 1950's that we could buy little paper-maché poppers, that would explode on impact, but I haven't seen anything like that for decades. I'm really stumped by this.
If everything in Texas is as big as they say then maybe it was a lightening bug. But I wouldn't put it past some ahole kid hitting you with one of those poppers or bang snaps.
I'm going with Lightning bug. He was probably holding it in for awhile so he could do one giant blast. Looking for one last female encounter and then splat.
