Maybe not a ripoff but in the past 25 years between six new cars, eight or so used cars, three, new motorcycles, two new boats, two RV's, tractors, TV's, refrigerators, toasters, barbeques etc. I've been offered about $40,000 worth of extended warranties. I ate it once on a $600.00 TV. The rest of the time I did what few repairs were needed on those vehicles and other items myself. If the engine in my HD or one of my other vehicles blows up tomorrow, I'll still be a bunch of money ahead.

I've bought three extended warranties and came out on all of them. I guess the biggest was an extended warranty on my RV. I can't remember how much that I paid for it, it was less than 2K for 7 yrs extended. I lived in that thing pretty much for 9 yrs. I went through 3 AC units, the 5K fridge twice, one of those high end dual electric/propane water heaters, and I think some more stuff.
It's amazing how soft we've gotten. Back when I bought my '79 FLH, the warranty amounted to putting some tools, gaskets, and a manual in the saddlebag.
...and that was at the GOOD dealers.

Bingo. That is why I have this collection of a very handy commodity called "Cash" laying around.
