Default RE: Premium gasoline....

some vehicles have low enough compression and/or mild enough programming that you can get away with running crap gas in them. i think alot of the harley owners that try running the lower octane fuels and don't notice the difference don't ride hard enough to notice the difference. i ride my bike hard and treat it like the ***** that it is so i've never tried lower octane fuel. my bmw also calls for premium and i treat it just like i treat the bike so i've also never downgraded fuel in it either. my gmc truck gets beat whenever i drive it also but it only calls for regular and i've never heard it audibley pinging before so i just continue to use regular unleaded. i do get a bunch of people at my job (i'm a bmw tech) who do use regular unleaded that complain all the time about lack of power, bad mileage, engine noise, rough running that are to cheap to use supreme (yah, you can afford a bmw but can't afford the extra 35 cents a gallon) and we have to tell them that it does make a difference in the drivability. every car is different and everyones driving/riding habits are different so i figure thats why some people notice a difference and some don't.

My 05 883C called for 87 octane and I ran 92 in it all the time because I thought it made a noticeable difference. The 07 Bob calls for 92 and that's what I run. When your fillin 4 gallons what's an extra $1.20?

Good thing the yukon doesn't run on Premium. Fortunately, you only need 5 gals a fillup. It's worth the xtra dollar to run what the Mfg says.

I do exactly the same thing. In the bike, I use the highest available wherever I stop, usually at least 92 octane. In my '04 GMC Envoy, I always put in the cheapest possible, usually around 87 or 88 octane. Have not a problem yet with either of them and will continue do it that way unless something happens.

Which made me wonder, does the 10% ethanol they add in some stations around here cause any problems to the engine? (other than slightly lowering the octane rating) Enquiring minds want to know!
I've read that modern Harley's (stock internal configuration) as well as cars do just fine on 10% ethanol.

actually, the ethanol raises the octane i think, because E85 is over 100 octane. you get lower mileage with it though.

The cool thing is, most modern cars/trucks have computers and wideband sensors etc that retard the timing etc etc so you can run cheap gas. The ole Harley don't.
My sports cars require premium...they get the cheap stuff. Runs the same.

Like another said. Thankfully a 5 gallon tank of premium for the bike ain't going to kill me...
