Hi all,
I'm in the UK and have recently purchased a twin cam engine that was imported from the states. It was advertised as being from a fire damaged 2012 Fatboy, but I'd like to make sure of the year before I start ordering parts. The main reason for this is that I intend to order a primary offset kit from Zodiac which lists two different kits for 07-11, and 2012-13. So I need to be sure the motor came from a 2012 model and not a 2011 registered in 2012. I've been searching online to try and find a way to decode the engine number, but it seems that, (at least on the later bikes), everything is based around the VIN. I've tried a couple of local Harley dealerships as well but they've been next to useless stating that they can't help unless I have the full VIN. So I'm hoping someone on this site can point me in the right direction. The number stamped on the casing is 1471230644
Thanks in advance
Bear

Reason: Misspelling
The engine number is separate from the VIN. Only the MOCO can give you what you want to know. Any dealer can request full information on the engine and get it.

Thanks for the reply. As stated in my original post I've tried the local Harley dealers who were less than helpful.Looks like I'll have to try further afield to find someone prepared to help.

To speak with a Harley-Davidson customer care representative call
1-800-258-2464 or (414) 343-4056.
Normal hours of operation are Monday through Friday 8:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m. Central Standard Time (CST).
if you go to the harley service information portal, and register as an 'independent operator' you can look up owner's manuals, parts manuals, wiring diagrams, etc. for most any late model.
are you looking at the correct number on the engine? on the left side, by the base of the cylinders? that number that you posted doesn't make any sense. for a 2012 fatboy, it should either be BX5C for a 96B, or BXVC for a 103B.
comparing the vin on my 2013, and my wife's 2012, you can see how they relate. for the 2012, the 10th digit is a 'c', and the 4th digit in the engine vin is also a 'c'. for my 2013, the 10th digit is a 'd', and again, the 4th digit in the engine id is a 'd'. the first two digits in the engine id relate to the model, in this case 'BX' for fatboy.
