It's a pretty good idea to check the weather forecast before heading up and over the pass. Though the weather may be getting ready to change in Sept.- Oct., a warm day up there then with most touristas gone is a piece of heaven. For those reasons, Yellowstone (enter at Cooke City)is also at its best then.
When the snow finally closes it, then it's done til the next late-May.
Also, check your WY map for the Chief Joseph Highway. Also outstanding and joins up with the Beartooth Highway if you come in from the South via Cody.

My dad and I did the beartooth last year, worthy ride !!! Red lodge has tiny but cool hd dealer, Red Lodge Cafe serves a good meal ! Beartooth is not for the faint of heart, lots of switchbacks and twisties !! will excersize your skills IT WAS A RUSH !!!!! also has a great rest area on the plateau, bring your picnic.
