Strange indent early this morning.Stopped to get gas. Was fueling up and the gas pump hose went berserk. The hose broke and wouldn't shut down. Must have been a defective shutoff mechanism or something. I heard the usual click but the hose was still fueling. The latch that you use to to keep it open was not engaged so that wasnt the issue. It just kept fueling and started overflowing. It sprayed everywhere. Got it all over my jacket and pants and was soaked in it as it was coming out like a garden hose full force when I removed the hose. Took me about twenty seconds to find an emergency shutoff button that was located on the other side of my station. Gas everywhere. Morale of the story--know where the emergency shutoff button is. Especially riding a bike as it was running all over the hot pipes and I was worried about it igniting, which it didnt do fortunately. By the time it was over it was like someone took a bucket of gas and dumped it under my bike. Went inside covered in gas and the attendant was non chalant about the while thing . They closed the island I was on for cleanup and shut down this particular pump but didnt acknowledge anything about the issue but tried to claim I was topping off the tank and had the open latch engaged, which it was not. I showed him straight up it was broke as it was clearly not engaged when I shut off the pump and also the latch wouldnt not swing to the close position and was jammed somehow . I never auto-fill when fueling my bike and do it manually. It was absolutely a hose issue. Went home and cleaned up. Still smell gas even after showering and hosed down and washed the whole bike. I noticed when I drove by this afternoon, it was taped off with yellow out of service tape covering the pump and hose.
I had something like that happen in Florida. Hose overflowed on hot bike. I thought I was gonna be the back up to Nicholas Cage's next Ghost Rider movie.
But in my case it was my lesson in that the auto shutoff often doesn't work with the small motorcycle tanks.
Yeah, I could have lit up but thankfully nothing ignited. Lesson learned I guess. Always know where the emergency shutoff switch is. Just ticked me off about the attendant and despite me saying I absolutely positively was not using the hose lock when fueling and even showed him that mechanism was totally busted as it was jammed in the open position and I could never have closed it. And it did click like it usually does when the tank is near full but it never stopped pumping and the auto hold-down latch was not engaged. One of those WTF moments when I pulled the hose out and the handle level was completely released but gas still flowing. I think something that controls the on/off valve just busted. The fact that the fueling station I used on the island is now entirely taped off indicates they figured out that something is FUBAR..
Man , that sucks , glad it didn't get any worse than that . You taught me a valuable lesson , I will now know to check for a shut off switch from now on . Even though this is something you may have not wanted to have happen to you , it's a valuable lesson we all can learn from .
