Question DIY Electroplating?

I remember several years ago I was fooling around youtube and stumbled on some guys doing home electroplating. Chroming, corrosion protective coatings and some really pretty nickel plate jobs. Gun parts mostly, as I recall, but they looked (to me anyway) to be pretty darned nice.

Anyone here ever tried something similar?

If so, what did you use? How did it turn out?

Any technical references or books?

Etc.

I have not done any electroplating, but I did use electrolosis for rust removal with a similar but opposite process. It worked well. I see no reason it wouldn't work in reverse.

I've slept since then, but what I remember were some really nice looking plate jobs. I don't know what they had in the way of training (if any?) but the equipment and chemicals didn't appear to be overwhelming.

I think about half a Harley's weight is in chrome, so.. If you could do this at home and achieve even satisfactory results, you could really get creative.. and for much less than paying for it outright.

This is obviously overly simplistic, but.. The concept.

I started to look into plating at home a few years ago. If you do a lot of parts it may pay for itself, but for the handful of parts I needed it turned out to be cheaper to drop them off at the chrome shop (especially if you have large parts).

I also liked letting the chrome shop worry about venting all those toxic corrosive fumes. Between the muriatic acid and the chrome, I wouldn't do it in the same room as anything I cared about.

http://forum.caswellplating.com/

Caswell is a good place to start learning. They sell hobbyist kits.

Electroless nickel is easy enough and popular for gun parts. Chrome is a toxic bitch.
