Default Ignition problem

Im having a no start problem, I have 12+votls at the battery until I turn on the ignition then I have no voltage. If I put the key in the acc position i have 6 maybe 7 volt (fluctuates) my odometer flickers. Do I have a bad ignition switch?

Possibly. Did you try tightening the battery terminals? That can cause low voltage; enough to run your lights but barely anything else.

With the key in the off position i have 12 volts at the battery, in the on position I have 0 volts at the battery. If I disconnect the pos terminal at the battery i have 12+volts. The battery has a full charge.

Did you check the connection at the ground?

Check both battery cable connections, both ends.
Battery might be shot.

You need to load test the battery. A battery can show proper voltage with no load, once a load is applied it won’t have the ccs to turn over the bike. Local dealer to me will test the battery for free. You do have to leave the battery because the tester will bring the battery up to full charge before it will do the test.

pull the seat and check battery voltage with meter with ignition off. Full charge should read 12.7ish. Then turn ignition on. If voltage doesn’t change try cranking engine while watching meter. If voltage drops then bad battery. If not then suspect cables or ignition. I suspect battery is bad or low on charge. It’s hard to tell the difference between 12.0 and 12.7 on the fairing voltage gauge. Bad battery will sometimes show 12.7 until a load is placed on it then voltage drops. Good luck.

I had a cable that was frayed inside the insulation. It looked fine but when I pulled on it the cable broke right off. I've heard of others having this same issue as well and it's easy to check.

Ok guys, I tracked back to a bad battery (9 months old). Jumped it with my boat battery and it started up. Thank you guys for your advice. I glad to see the brotherhood is still there after taking about a 12 year break from riding. On the road again. Thnx again
