I will be trailering my Fat Boy from northern Virginia to Plattsburgh (far northern) New York next week. I have made that run dozens of times (565 miles) BUT without the trailer. I'd like to avoid the Garden State Pkwy and am seeking an alternate around that congested north jersey area to hopefully come out on the NY Thruway whereI will be in familiar territory. Your advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks.
I'm from upstate NY. Not sure where you're coming from in Va but when I drive to the Ocean City Md or Virginia Beach, VA area my return trip would be US-1/Rt 113/Rt 13 northout of Maryland/Delaware. Over the Delaware Memorial Bridge and get on the Jersey Turnpike north. Jersey Turnpike to I-287 north.
I-287 to I-87 north. This route avoids the GS Parkway.
Try heading up to 695to 83to 81 (for like 175 miles) nice driving
Then follow the signs toward Albany...I believe it is 88 to Route 20 to 87 for the rest of your route. Try lookingthis up on a map. It runs you a little longer than the Garden State Parkway but the trip will be a lot more peaceful with no tolls. My husband and I travel from N. VA to Vermont a few times a year.
I go to northern Vt every year. I tow my boat up to Lake Champlain. I go I- 83 to I-81 in Harrisburg, Pa. Then I-81 up to Scranton where I pick up I-84. Then I-84 to Newburgh and hit I-87. 87 goes straight to Albany. Stay on 87 in Albany and follow signs to Montreal. 87 goes right through Plattsburg. Not a bad trip. Harrisburg has the worst traffic. The only toll is Newburg to Albany about $7.00 with a tandem trailer. Hope it helps.
You know what - we've taken 84 before too and I just couldn't think of that at the moment. Thanks! Where do you go in Northern, VT jbe? I'm originally from there and my husband and I will be moving back to the NE Kingdom in 2010.
Go up to St.Albans. Family has summer place on the lake. Cannot get both bike and boat up, so I plan to rent a bike this year. I was going to go the NE Kingdom.
jbe - NE Kingdom is beautiful! It is a bit more rugged than the western part of the state. I go to both. My family all lives outside of the Burlington area but I'll be headed to Glover - 20 miles from the Canadian border as soon as I can!
