Thinking about a 2007 Nightster..
Anyway the reason for the post is that I have always been traditionally a bagger guy, I had a new Road Glide, and most recently a Road King. Loved them both and sure did listen to music a lot and all that.. but in 8 years, took 0 long distance rides, lol. Sounds great in concept, but Im reality just never happens for me. Sold them both and bought myself a brand new soft top Camaro SS aaaaaaand what do you know, I immediately miss my bike.
So anyway I am interested in this Nightster having literally never even ridden a sportster of any kind before. Thoughts? Is it like night and day difference, not going to like it at all type of deal, or am I gonna learn to love it? Is the Nightster in general (a 2007) a decent bike? Would love to hear some opinions and such.
Thanks in advance!
I've had a couple of Sporty's when I was younger, but a few years ago I took one in trade on a 4 wheeler,
and when I rode it, it seemed like a minibike to me. I'm so used to my road king now, it just seemed way to small for me.
It was still a fun ride, but just not big enough for my 6 ft body.
You might be just fine though
That seat may or may not work for you. I rode the stock seat for about 35,000 miles; it was only tolerable. Put a couple aftermarket seat on, one was a Mustang with a bit of a back, and the other is more like a traditional cobra seat. The Mustang rides beset of all the seats because it's back holds you in place. That spung solo will not do that once you're on it and the springs compress.
Those pipes are annoyingly loud (I'm a geezer who's lost lots of hearing, too), and in my misspent youth I loved drag pipes! I had a set of similar pipes on my 2006 Fat Boy and got rid of them for a Thunderheader. My Nightster still has the stock pipes, but I drilled the center plug out of the mufflers - just enough louder than stock to satisfy and sound remarkably like an XR750 flat tracker.
Bars are too high for me, personally, but might work for you. My idea is that if your hands are higher than your shoulders, you're going to have problems with circulation. That bothers some people, but doesn't seem to affect others. You'll find out soon enough and bars are an easy fix.
I have a similar air cleaner (TC Bros) on my Fat Boy; so far it has worked as expected, and helps with leg room.
The pirate cover would have to go, LOL!
Something to think about/remember - the first year Nightster tends to eat Start & Run relays. Seems something about the way the wire loom runs into the back of the relay/fuse block allows water to run down the loom and infiltrate the back of the block. It never affects the fuses so much as the relays. Coils don't go bad, but Run relay contacts evidently get corroded enough that eventually you don't hear the fuel pump prime, or the Start relay passes just enough current to cause the starter solenoid to just chatter - that's really hard on the solenoid contacts. Pull all the fuses and relays, shoot dielectric grease into the fuse and relay sockets on the block, reinsert fuses, and shoot some more dielectric grease onto the male contacts on the relays, then put them back into place. Helps them quite a bit. NAPA carries the relays - AR614, I think.
Has the ECM been replaced or otherwise modified to account for the pipes & air cleaner? The '07 has limited ability to self-compensate for free-er flowing intake/exhaust. You'll know if you ride it and it backfires, etc.
Price - hit NADA and Kelly to get an idea. Offer the trade in value and go no higher than halfway between trade-in and retail. The bars, pipes, other extras do not add to the value unless you want them to.
Good luck!
