I use the cleaner-oil kit. Use it at oil change time. Just follow instructions on the kit. Spray cleaner on and let it sit 5-10 minutes. Wash off with water from hose. Shake off water and set out to dry fully, 10-15 minutes. Then spray plenty of oil on and reassemble. Easy Peasy.
When you oil it with the spray, just go back-and-forth lightly until the color is even. In my experience, the filters can get dirty pretty quickly. After a couple thousand miles the color is usually gone, but they are still effectively filtering the air.
When it's cleaning time, after you've sprayed it and let it sit for 10 minutes or so, be sure to send the water in the office at direction of the air flow. You don't want to push dirt further into the filter, but push it out from the inside.
I usually let it air dry or night, definitely don't use compressed air. Re-oil and you're good to go.
