Default Bike lurching forward

Hi all.

My 2018 Fat Bob is lurching forward on start up.

Clutch pulled in.

Bike in first.

Usually happens more if i back the bike out of the garage before starting.

Normal?

Thank you!

Yeah, that's pretty normal. You can start it in neutral, but it's going to "clunk" when you put it in gear, so I guess it's a coin flip. Some will say it's hard on the starter when you start it in gear with the clutch pulled in.

Edit - Never mind on the "clunk". I hear M8s don't clunk when you put them in gear.

Try working the clutch before startup. Sometimes the plates “stick” together. I do this and seems to help.

When I complained about this happening when I first bought my '18 Heritage, almost all the responces were scoldings. I was told over and over that I should only start in neutral.

Now this also happens on my '19 SGS. On both bikes it only occurs when the bikes are cold. After warmed up, there is very little, if any, lurch when starting in gear.

I try to remember to make sure I'm in neutral before starting when the bikes are cold but what they say about good intentions...so if I forget I just live with it.

Yep cold starts I use neutral. If it’s warm I’ll start in gear with clutch in. That goes for both the HD and Yami.

It does it if I don’t back it up, but not as much it seems.

I do think it has only happened when cold.

Good intel.

Finding N is worse than the lurch I think

Appreciate it.

Thank you!

You're not putting much more load on the starter when starting in gear and clutch pulled in vs starting in neutral. The effort to overcome the clutch drag is small compared to what it takes to turn the engine over.
