I was in a major accident back in the 90s, that, by the grace of God, I walked away from. I was driving a Chevy Citation, and some guy in a Ford Ranger ran a red light at over 30 mph, and tore, literally, the front of the car off. The impact was so violent, my left knee went THROUGH the plastic divider on the dash, and dented the passenger inside door. I did not have a seatbelt on. At the time, I didnt know what happened, but I smelled gas, and panicked. I kicked the drivers door wide open, from the passenger seat. I am quite sure that, had I been wearing a seatbelt that day, I would have broken my neck. But, those were different times.

I have a full face, two 3/4s, and two half helmets. If the weather is decent I wear no helmet. Otherwise I wear a half helmet. I enjoy riding and I ride for no other reason besides pleasure. I have been down with a 3/4 helmet and without a helmet. I have been ejected from a car during a rollover at over 80mph and not wearing a helmet or seat belt (seat belts were not available on American cars in 1957 ). I only needed a few stitches on my scalp from the auto accident and no head or even scalp injuries from the motorcycle accidents. I did have other body parts seriously damaged in the auto accident when I was 19 and healthy enough to heal well. It may be fate or my good looks but at 81 am too old to change and too young to want to. Ride safe ya'll.

I’ve been all over the map on helmets. When I lived in Ohio I rode without one a lot. Then I went through a full face helmet stage because, of course, they are safer. Then I moved to Georgia and once the weather turned hot and humid I was suffocating with that thing on my head. I bought a Crazy Al’s half helmet and now I remember why I used to enjoy riding without a helmet so much. I know my half helmet doesn’t offer much in the way of safety but it’s so much more enjoyable. I’m willing to take my chances in the interest of maximum riding enjoyment. I love the feel of the wind in my face and just being out there in the elements. In the end I decided if I have to suffocate inside a helmet I might as well leave the bike at home and drive my car. At least it has AC.

Edited to add: And no, my full face is not cheap. It’s a Shoei RF-SR.

When it's your time to go, it's your time to go, helmet or not:

My wife only wears a half helmet year round. For me I like my Shoei 3/4 best of all and ride with it a lot if solo or in rain. But when two up she cannot see around it very well so I also use a half matching hers to keep her happy and enjoying the ride.

We have been using Bell Pit Boss half helmets for some time now. But I just ordered us the Sena Calvery with the built in communications. They were on sale at Revzilla and actually look good. We'll see how they do on our ride to Daytona next week.

Ride safe

I have a modular helmet that lets me turn my half into a 3/4. I can also add a full face cover. It's a cover only, and would not offer any kind of impact protection.

Makes a big difference in the cold weather, but I find myself having to manage fog on the goggles more as the full face unit traps the moisture from my breathing.

I can wear my half helmt all day long. When I put the other parts on and turn it into a full face, I have to take it off every hour or so. I hate the confined feeling and I definitely have less visibility. Sound is considerably more muffled as well.

I prefer half helmets for two reasons.
I live in Texas and with the heat a half helmet is a lot cooler and also for some reason I don't like something covering my head like a full face helmet does.

I have full, 3/4 and 1/2. All depends on weather and how I feel at the time on what I wear.

None of my bikes offer wind or bug / bird impact protection so full face it is, plus I don't want the surgeon to rebuild my face with my *** in the event I do a face plant. I also ride in cold weather, no choice up here at the north pole.
