The comparisons need to be made equally. An engine will consume more oil the longer the oil is run in the engine. If a person changes their oil every 3000 miles, and burns a 1/2 quart, there is a chance that in the next 2,000 they will burn 1/2 quart. Also, how hot the motor runs can also cause more consumption, and how hard you run them. Exactly the same engines in two different applications can have different results. I have seen two identically Spec’d trucks come off the line back to back have not only different oil consumption, but also different fuel consumption and shift differently. I have 8 vehicles, of which 6 I use to make money, I don’t screw around with their maintenance. And I would never start, run, ride or maintain my Pan like I would my M8. Their are many myths surrounding oil.... one is that you need to change it religiously at 3,000 miles, and another is that any oil consumption is a bad thing. If you burn a cup of oil every 2,500 miles... you are still burning a quart every 10,000 miles.

We changed the spark plugs (32,000 miles on them) when the oil change was done and they where clean, the engine sounds tight, it’s performance is as it was new, and the fuel economy as stated is around 50 mpg on the highway. I have no concerns about the state of the engines health...... but let’s be clear, I have, and will renew, the warranty when it gets close to the end date, and that is simply because I do not trust anything mechanical as I am a firm believer in Entropy.... lol.

End of the day - every factory published number is an embelousment. Blueprinted motors under ideal circumstances are used. End of the day, Im happy with my stock performance and love my bike..

For the most part I agree with your viewpoint, but there are other factors that can effect oil usage. I've found over the years that different brands of oil have different life span in my bike. For some reason my bike will consume Harley's branded oil more so then others. If you have leaks or drips, weeps, or oil being dumped into the air cleaner to be burned in the motor, that really cannot be considered consumed. If none of those things happened, the oil would remain in the motor. If your motor gets past the designed temperature range of operation, say in really hot climates plus being stuck in slow or stop and go traffic the oil being used needs to be able to withstand those temps, and not flash off and turn to vapor which will be burned off in the motor. That would be considered severe service, so if that is the life your bike lives, changing it more often will probably keep it on the road longer.,,,

That’s one of the reasons I am going to a Synthetic oil..... and I don’t drive in traffic very much, but have
seen hot days, just not a lot consecutively.

All I can say is my 96 was enough, the 103 we had was very good and our 114 is awesome. It gets the job done very well. Two up cruising I-95 through Florida or all day on the Blue Ridge Parkway, or up the hills of I-81 through Virginia. It has what it takes!
