It depends on the location...but I have parked up next to a store or restaurant. Asked a LEO friend of mine regarding this...he said it's private property and unless you're blocking an entrance or walkway, it's a non-issue.

Yep...it's common place in Europe to park bikes/scooters on the sidewalk. It saves parking spaces in lots and roadside for larger vehicles.
Good grief... Can't understand why some people are getting uptight over this practice. Not a lot of places offer "motorcycle" spots in parking lots.
Here in San Diego it's legal to park your bike in between metered cars on the street. But the meter still needs to be paid....so make sure whoever parked their car in the spot has paid the meter for the time you'll be there. Do this a lot downtown San Diego....
