Default Question about adding the fuel level sensor

I mounted up the combo tach/speedo last week, and now I'm thinking I will just go ahead and buy the fuel level sensor kit so I will have a fuel gauge. I mean why not It's only money...

Question I have is, I've seen some say the sensor HAS to be mounted up and hooked to the tach/speedo BEFORE the 30 some miles when the tach/speedo marries to your bike. Anyone know if this is true, the Harley website mentions nothing about this, and it doesn't make sense to me if you did. It would mean if the sensor ever failed, you'd be SOL unless you wanted to buy a new tach/speedo.

I use an app called Simply Auto. This is a fuel tracker. I record each and every gallon of fuel I use. I know you are talking fuel gage, but bear with me. I had a Sportster....no fuel gage. I used the app, knew how large my tank was, and figured I could travel 100 miles before I got to fill up time. I fill up, reset odometer and head out. Now I have a Street Glide....same thing. I use the fuel app and track. I know I can safely travel 200 miles around town, and 240-260 on a trip before I need to worry about fuel. Again I fill up, reset my odometer, and head out. Why I'm telling you this is that I do not trust fuel gages. I've seen many that do not read right, and people who take these as gospel...then run out because of some glitch. I trust my odometer. The app is free. Use it and figure out how much fuel you use for xx amount of miles, reset your odometer, and repeat. You will learn how far you can get by your odometer. This is probably your best and cheapest fuel gage. YMMV

The bike has a low fuel light on it, and I know it comes on at around 140-150 miles. On summer blended fuel I get around 55-56 mpg, and winter blended fuel I get around 52-53 mpg. I know when the fuel light comes on I have somewhere between 1-1.5 gallons left. That has worked fine for me but, since the new speedo has the fuel level function, I figure why not use it. I've had bikes in the past that had a fuel gauge, I never relied totally on them, and wouldn't now.

I bought it for my Sporty and don't think it's worth getting, honestly, and I still use do what I did without it by using trip A / trip B to figure out range.
