Sorry I can't be of any help , but I think this is the installation instructions . Might help someone get a little further ahead with helping the op . Doesn't say anything about the ecu , that I can see .

I wouldn't run a Crane HI-4 ignition in a lawnmower, let alone a bike. They're junk.
I don't know how you would go about by-passing that part of it to be able to use the ECU anyway. or what the point of that would be.

I think he may be talking about the factory ignition module/box under the side plate instead of the ecu. I'm only guessing though.
it's an 88, there would be no ecu on that bike. so yes, it sounds like he is talking about running the crane hi 4 ignition instead of the stock factory ignition. and no, sorry, can't help
1988 Sportsters have a Black Box ignition modual from the factory. ECU only come with an EFI bike. You can not run a HI-4 nosecone ignition system AND an ignition modual. Install the HI-4 and trash the modual. Personally, I would look at getting an ULTIMA complete ignition system vs the HI-4. BUT, not my bike, not my choice.

I missed where he said what year he had but I thought that was what he was talking about. I know nothing about an ecu, I stick to carb'd bikes.
I have a 92 1200 sporty that has had the Crane Hi-4 in it since I bought it back in the mid-nineties. Not what I would have put in but hasn't given me a reason to take it out. It doesn't get ridden much at all any more so that might help the longevity.
