so, i am one of those semi-old dudes with the geezer glide ('20 EG-Standard) and the patchless leather vest (there is a pin or 2), and i admit that there is something incredible about "hair in the wind"
this year however, i ended up buying a full face modular helmet because it was a frost 50 degrees for more than 3 days in florida. (this winter was the toughest 2 weeks ever here)
I have to say.. helmets these days are NOTHING like the helmets of yesteryear. they are very light, very comfortable and frankly, with a bluetooth speaker inserted, they are more of a godsend than the annoyance that they used to be.
with the right features, fogging is a thing of the past (pinlock all the way).
i have an electra glide standard. i refused to pay anyone $3k for a stereo that i was only going to be able to hear at a stop light anyway. we all have a phone with music/news anyways, and who wants to sit at home waiting for that call, when you can get riding and still take it on the road with a bluetooth head set (set phone to autoanswer)
these helmets are built with removable liners (for cleaning the smell), and they have cut-outs for little speakers that pack a punch these days. you get better sound from those helmet speakers than you ever will on a bike in the wind.
turns out, you can still be semi-cool in a full face helmet and a sleeveless vest lol... you just might need an extra tattoo or 2
so for all my bothers and sisters out there............. consider the full face helmet. for safety, and practicality. it takes a minute to get used to... but it is well worth it, in my opinion
p.s. check out a decent pair of kevlar jeans... i am an RN, and i assure you that road rash and the infection is much much more painful/deadly than a broken bone.... and it lingers a LOT LOT longer.
Lifetime no helmet guy here. Like the OP, I started wearing one about two years ago more for weather protection than head protection. Went down this past October and pretty confident if not for the helmet, I wouldnt be here right now.
You are an RN and just now realized its a good idea to wear a helmet? lol. Glad to see you rocking one though they are better than they used to be and honestly you get used to it.

they never told you? nurses are the WORST patients ever! lol
also... when you are young, you assume you are fairly immortal. when you get older, you start getting a little more pragmatic. its like smoking........... we knew it was terrible for us, but didnt quit until we played with the grandkids, got winded and realized we cant hang lol (turns out that smoking also was a huge negative on the dating scene, but we were clueless)
After about 25 years of wearing a cheap skid lid I went to a full face, and haven’t looked back. I just picked up a new dresser, 2019 Roadglide and I’ll still stay with the full face. My first one was about $250 but found it a little uncomfortable after a while so I bit the bullet and spent $800 on the one I have now, and glad I did.

Fair point, I know now that I'm a father how much differently I look at stuff. I'm still not willing to give up riding but I'm much more cautious when I do ride. Having a family and a little one expecting you home every night tends to set your brain in a different state of mind over your decisions and consequences.
Lifetime wearer here. Just scored a Shoei Neotec II for a great price. Very comfortable I will say...My Shoei Platinum is probably the most comfortable though and actually more quiet than the Neotec
