H-D should make them waterproof instead of having to use a cover.
Funny thing, but just about all of these bags aren't waterproof. I don't get that either. It sort of makes a pretty good argument for a milk crate, garbage bag and bungies.
I bought the "Biker's friend" barrel bag for the ironhead. It doubles as a rider backrest and that thing is waterproof. It's made out of fake leather. Using it on the Road King isn't really an option though.
This bag works if youre by yourself for a camping road trip.
but if youre riding two up , its just big enough to bring extra clothing for the two of you.
I use a product from Rust -O-Leum that sprays on and is a water barrier for boots and other materials. Rode through two days of rain and my boots with ballistic material was fairly dry. You could also put a large garbage bag inside the bag to protect your belongings. I understand the waterproof from HD, I blame the bean counters. Been through some frog strangling rains and I understand "dry" concept.
The only problem with HD luggage is that it is not water proof. You have to carry and put the cover over it. We used these for years and they did a good job, but found DrySpec and never looked back. Went with hi viz orange which also adds a level of safety.
I have one of these type bags with roller wheels and a handle for pulling along once on the ground. Good storage. Not water proof without the cover as has been said. But yes, the sunshine is causing the outer fabric to de laminate from the underlying material. Weather worn leather looks better in the long run. By the time I'm done with this bag it ain't going to look very good. So. Buyer be forewarned.
I've been using this bag and the bigger one for about 3 or 4 years. Gone through several pouring down storms and surprised they didn't get that wet inside. Not waterproof but still wasn't too bad. The boots, however, were another story..
