Just curious how you know this? Do you own a shop?

Yeah, I'm not questioning his statement at all, but I'd like to know how he knows this too. For a Small to medium sized shop, as he says, that sounds like a HUGE figure.

$10,000 /day X 250 business days/year = 2, 500,000 annually. This translates to selling about 35 Ultra Limiteds, at a 20% profit margin, each month of the year, just to break even. At 20 working days a month, that's selling 1.75 bikes a day.

I wonder how close that is to actual numbers of a small to medium sized dealer. Might be closer than I'd imagined after all. Assuming my math is correct, that is.

Maybe they’ll get a good feeling for what it’s like to be closed for good from all of this . And lower their bike prices to some affordable numbers .

ALL roads are off limits in NJ . Essential personnel only .
And most all retail stores are closed !

It's not based on sales, it's based on expenses. Your sales figure doesn't take into account a service or parts department with their intake and margins.

$10,000 a day for a small to medium dealership is a little high with ten employees. Or is it?

Salaries
1 manager - $200
3 sales staff - $150 ea
2 parts personnel - $150 ea
2 clothing personnel - $100 ea
1 service manager - $200
3 mechanics - $150 ea
1 F&I guy - $ 150
1 bike washer/runner - $100

Those wages right there would be somewhere around 1.5k a day for however many days a month they are open? The dealer is paying a portion of FICA and is paying all the workmens comp on top of that.

Overhead
- lights
- gast
- water
- rent
- insurance
- promotion activities
- property taxes
- etc.

A couple thoughts on your numbers. Most dealers that I have dealt with are open 6 days/week for most of the year. They don't just sell m/c. The clothing, parts, and shop work all have to be considered, as well. My local has very little parts inventory except for oil and filters. You have to pay in advance. I had to order and pay for an air filter. Last year their markup over any other local supplier (non-internet) for a pair of tires was 95 per tire. Those other suppliers were making money. HD was just a gouge, but I am sure that people pay it--won't mention labor.

It is based on sales. Where do you think the INCOME comes from to PAY expenses? Those figures I put out were just an example from ONE DEPT....SALES.... of what you would have to sell to cover ALL the EXPENSES of $10,000 per day. I never said the figures were the ONLY income a dealership had. I really didn't think that was necessary, as anybody that has ever been in a Harley Dealer knows there is income from other sources like Parts, Service, clothes, etc.

You threw out figures for salaries etc. that were not backed up with source info. I guess you were using them as examples.
