My son will be getting a bike (Rebel 300 - he is 14 and in Oklahoma he can get a license after having taken the MSF course which he has). At first he and I will be doing back road rides until I am comfortable with his skill level.
Is there a good communication system (mics or whatever) that we could get to allow us to communicate to one another in our helmets?
I've always used Cardo Scala.I like Cardo over Sena as Cardo is waterproof. If you communicate with a lot of bikes the mesh system on Cardo is superior.
I have the Cardo Freecom 1+. I only talk to my wife in the backseat. Upgraded from my 10 year old Cardo comms.
It's personal preference. You can't go wrong with Cardo or Sena. If you are an AMA member you get a 20% discount from Cardo
check out the reviews on the Lexin B4FM, 2 units for less than Sena or Cardo. I have these, crystal clear blue tooth, good fm reception, up to a mile and can link up to 4 units. Wife and I have them on 3/4 helmets, each units has two mics depending on what type helmet you have.

A bit (a lot) off topic...
If it's not too late give some serious thought to the Rebel 500 instead of 300. I just went through this buying a starter bike for my wife. The 300 will struggle to keep up with highway traffic. Weight between the 2 is just 20 pounds or so, the 500 is a lot more bike in every way.
If you can swing it go for the 2020 model... all LED lighting & VERY easy to pull slipper clutch.
Have fun!

At age 14, he is limited to 300cc or smaller in OK. When my son got his permit at that age he was not allowed to ride on the highway even though his bike (Ninja 250) could have kept up.
On the original topic - Most people have either Cardo or Sena, hard to go wrong with either one. I have a Cardo unit that I like, but it is the solo unit so no intercom.
