I wouldn't take a bike with a lot of aftermarket parts in it to a dealer that didn't install them.

No indies around here that I know of, other than backyard mechanic guys. Like I said, I only took it to the dealer when i had no other choice. This was one of those situations.

Cheers!

Agreed. I had no other choice at the time. I told them all about the mods/parts I had installed.

Cheers!

Well, a shop needs to pay a living wage, offer benefits, and vacation time if it truly wants to compete for the best techs. Small shops that can't compete for the best mechanics have a revolving door of help in general. If you're a stand alone dealer in the northern hemisphere, I believe it's extremely tough to have the same core servicemen year after year. So you get the new guys fresh out of MMI and if they have any skills and the pay isn't covering their bills, they be off like a prom dress. Plus they probably didn't learn the trade by working on some ham handed shade tree mechanic's terrible attempts to be a mechanic.

If this is a shot at me for doing my own wrenching, you have no clue what you're talking about. I did a 5 year automotive technician apprenticeship in the early 90s (decided to go another career route), and have been wrenching on cars and bikes for well over 30 years. I have, and use, factory service manuals for the vehicles I work on, high quality hand/power tools (mostly Snap-On), and high quality torque wrenches that cover all the ranges I need. I am METICULOUS where my work is concerned. I take my time, double and triple check my work, and I would put my skills up against any tech working at a shop for a living.

Cheers!

A local HD shop in our area was owned by a local fella and employed a lot of local talent. Seemed more like a family business at the time. Then a big business took them over and all of a sudden staff changed regularly, no real personal touch. Hard to even get to know your mechanic as they changed so much. One of their old wrenches went out on his own and I have been dealing with him out of his garage ever since. A lot to be said for knowing your mechanics, peace of mind.

Not a shot at you, Clammy. To be honest I don't remember what you wrote. I'm just going from what I've seen as an employee years ago at different shops. Don't know you and can't comment on your abilities.

Threads like this are why I do all my own work, short of a crankshaft rebuild/balance, extensive head work, or a cylinder boring.
