Default Need some quick advice on cam issue

Here it is. My mechanic messed up and installed a S&S 583 cam instead of the S&S 585 that was supposed to go in the bike. S&S thought it would be hard to tune properly, but somehow he got it running pretty well. However, the HP numbers are low. I could make him swap them out and retune the bike with the other cam, but my fear is now that I have ridden it as is, what if I don't like how the new one will perform? Main concern is I will lose the low end power and performance to gain more top end. That would suck. But if my low end stays roughly the same and I gain on the top end, that would be ideal.

More details on the build:
2007 HD Deuce
Stock heads
107 S&S big bore kit
Arlen Ness big sucker intake
Rush cross over exhaust (1.75" baffles) (similar to V&H big shot exhaust

It only pulled 94HP on the dyno but 114TQ. I don't have the chart available but the TQ comes on early and stays throughout the RPM range. S&S says I am leaving at least 10 HP on the table. They think I should at least be able to get 1 per cube, which would be 107. TQ they said shouldn't change much either way. S&S says change it, what do you guys think?

Right from the S&S site...
”583: Optimized for use in the SoftailŽ/DynaŽ lines, this cam makes horsepower and torque that you can feel all the way through the rpm range, making the most power right where you need it:1500–5000rpm. Bolt-in.
585: Designed for 88 to 95 CID engines with compression ratios from 9.7:1 to 10.5:1 and 100 to 124 CID engines from 9:1 to 10:1 compression. Provides massive horsepower and torque increases starting at 3000rpm and holds steady all the way to redline. 3500-6000 rpm for 88" - 103" engines and 2500-5500 for larger engines. ”

IMHO, the 583 seems more for easy riding. The 585 more for those that hammer it frequently.

Yes, you will lose some lower RPM torque when swapping from the 583 to the 585 (2500 and down). If your happy with how the bike performs leave it be, as you know what you have now.

Thanks TriGeezer,

I have read that and talked with them online, I was hoping someone with experience with both would get more detailed.

For example. "I have ridden bikes with both in a similar setup. Yes on paper you lose a little low end power, but in reality and normal riding, you are out of those low rpms so fast you won't notice it and you will notice the power increase as it comes on around 2500 rpm If you are riding 2 up and primarily cruising around, I'd leave it as is. If you are riding solo and getting on it more often, you definitely want to make the change"

Thanks Steve.

That's my conundrum. I wish he had done the other one in the first place because then I wouldn't know what this one is like. Now I am constantly thinking "would the other cam be even better for this bike!"

Since I've run them both in the same bike same engine I can feel the differences and above 2500 to around 4000 there pretty damn close, above the 4000 area the 585 will win. So where is it your looking for a gain?
