If the price was right, the VIN / frame issue wouldn't bother me. But if the wiring's to ****, what else could be...

Very good chance another salvage bike passed on to to an unsuspecting buyer . If most of the work was done right you should be able in time figure out the wiring or find an indy that can. Careful what you put into it. Likely you are stuck with it for lfe unless you just want to give it away.
You need to post a lot more of the story to get information that will get you going in the right direction.

Sounds like some one traded the bike on a car at a Ford dealer and a tech tried to fix something electrical.

As mentioned, check the engine casings and the number on your registration or title. If you purchased it recently, and have proof that they misrepresented it, you might be able to return it. In my area the local news does reports on this kind of thing.

Indeed, OP thinks he has a Harley 2005 FLSTFI Fat Boy. I'm also thinking there's not as much value for a home built bike.
