Dont use steel wool on chrome (ANY TYPE OF STEEL WOOL) I tried 0000 and it took the shine out of my heat shield so bad I had to buy a new one. So glsd I didnt try it on my springer front end.

Nevrdull cotton wadding or Semichrome polish. Lots of other polishes work OK. As a rule you can estimate coarseness by color (Blue is usually "all-purpose" and red is very fine).
I sometimes use jewelers rouge.
In extreem cases maybe copper or bronze wool. Never use steel wool (no matter how fine).
