Default Data Link Connector, how many pins?

My DLC has only 5 pins instead of 6. Is that correct, or am I missing one?

What is your bike? You can get the wiring diagram from the HD service info portal (SIP) - Home | Harley-Davidson SIP

On my bike there is all 6 wires but I cannot fathom why one of them is the brake light power BE/R from the BCM.

The connector also has accessory power from the BCM, a permanent power through the P&A fuse, CAN low and high plus a ground.

So if it were just the data link connector it probably only needs 4 wires but you get a power connection thrown in for devices you want to connect.

Best as I can see it is correct that pin 4 is empty.

Good recommendation right there.

I just registered and can see a ton of information on my bike by just plugging in the VIN.

Also found 2 recalls on mine too (Brake fluid and fuel filter related).

The answer is there is no firm answer for all models and years. In general the 2001- 2004 used a 4 pin connector with 4 pins used. 2005 - up that used the 4 pin connector only used 3 pins in them. In 2012 - 2013 some models switched to a 6 pin connector and most of those 6 pin connectors had 6 pins. In 2014 more models switched to the 6 pin and they dropped to only 5 pins used. In 2018 all models switched to the 6 pin and they all still use 5 pins. In 2021 it has switched again to a different style 6 pin connector and only 4 pins are used.
