Default Never Do This!

That recent thread about the boy who caught his shoe laces on the side of his bike as he pulled up to a light and tipped over, got me to thinking about other stuff, small stuff, you pick up along the way that can save a lot of misery and expense.

Here's one:

NEVER park on the right side of a car driven by an old lady. In fact, don't do it if it's even a young lady, old man, young man, or hell, anybody for that matter.

I've seen too many people back out of their parking spaces and start swinging wide too early. One time, this old lady of which I speak missed my bike by less than an inch. She couldn't see my bike parked right beside her, on her right. She drove off, never had any idea she almost side- swiped me.

If you park on the left side, at least they have a better chance of seeing your bike.

Had the shoelace problem last month. Loop tangled in the shift arm. Got home and pulled the lace knot apart. Measured the free end of the lace with a short loop, cut the free end, and used some shrink wrap from my soldering kit to make a new end.

I have always tucked my laces in, riding or not, for my entire life.

By the way, that little plastic end on a shoelace is called an “aglet.”

The more you know…..

If you are parked on the left side of the old lady then you are parked on the right side of the next car down. Obvious but has me questioning this whole theory.

Yup. Me as well. So unless your parking where there is only two spaces, your going to have "somebody" next to you that could possibly a bad clueless driver.

Then when you park on the left side, all they’ll do is smack your bike with the car door.
