I was there (here), in the early 70's as a child, the golden age, they were fantastic times for biking, the town was wide open, nobody bothered you, some slept right on the beach with their bikes under a canvas tarp.

Everyone rode to Daytona, sat around a campfire at night passing around a jug and swapped stories, (a lot of drugs going around though ), there was plenty to do without having to spend money, it was night and day to what is just a selling fest today and unlike today, there was a decency level people didn't cross, Daytona events and the town in general has lost that in a major way today...

I only live a four and a half hour ride from Sturgis and only do the Black Hills before and after the rally for that same reason!!

Made the mistake of riding through Laconia during the rally. I will never do that again. I have visited Daytona Beach, Sturgis, etc. but avoid the rallies like the plague. Never ending line ups, ridiculous prices for everything, questionable noises and smells.

Must be my anti social tendencies manifesting themselves...

This. We can pull up are pants and grump about the good 'ole days or we can accept and move on. I haven't been to Bike Week in 5 years. When I do go back, it will be to see old friends and reminiscence. The only thing that I can't accept are those radio riders who think we want to hear their music while cruising Main Street.

When I first started dating my wife, (1988) she asked me to go to Daytona to visit her Dad. I was all excited to go to Florida for the first time, then I was shocked to meet her 6'6 tattooed biker of a Dad. (My wife is only 5'4) I knew him and I would get along great when he said "Ain't no woman worth going to jail for, so enjoy yourself and don't get caught doing what she don't know about!" 34 yrs later I am still with her and have not got caught or gone to jail.... Miss that guy....

No doubt Sturgis and all the other rally's have changed over time. Me and my Posse never go to mingle, we ride, there's a lot of space out there to get away from the clowns.
It and other Vacations are what you make of it.
