Here in the SE Coast weather has been upper 90's with heat index (in the shade) hovering around 110 - 117. It just builds all day. At 1630 hrs. I hit the road from work. As I am going home I see on the bypass slab ahead of me a rider. At my exit I pull up beside him and speak. I ask where he is going since I see a NY plate. He says he's heading home and staying overnight in Myrtle Beach. I wish him well and we make our turn and ride together for a few miles until I reach my turn off.
What struck me odd, I have a shorty helmet on, dressed to stay as cool as possible in sport casuals. He is wearing a open face gelmet with shield (HD Jet Helmet /Black) and wearing a Black jacket. I'm sitting there melting to the pavement grabbing a cold drink of water trying to hydrate. Do all New Yorkers dress that way in the hot summertime?
Actually when its crazy hot & humid like that its better to have al that stuff on. It may seem unbearable but it keeps the sweat near the skin, thus keeping you cool. W/ a t-shirt on the hot air evaporates the moisture on your skin so fast its ahrd to stay hydrated, so while you may be dying in a jacket, you ARE actually dying w/o one,.
Whenever the outside temp is hotter than your body temp (98F-99F if your not ill) you are better off NOT exposing yourself to the heat. The heat outside of your body is more uncomfortable than the body heat your retaining inside of the clothing.
I know there's a much better way of putting the above info, but I'm no doctor/scientist.

I've never seen apedestrianor cager dressed that way. LOL
I know what you mean I see guys like that all the time even some in chaps and I sweat just looking at them. The post by bgismo is correct. But I just can't dress that way.
I don't tolerate heat well. Bought one of those evaporative cooling vests to put over my t-shirt. Lasts about two hours, and you can soak it at any gas station, rest stop, etc. Keeps me from wanting to pass out. Cost about $30. Does extend your riding season.
A group of us went on a 300 mile ride. It was about 85 degrees when we started out and got up to 100 degrees that day. We were traveling through Colorado and most of the ride is about 7000 ft. We looked liked like we were crazy, I had a long sleeve shirts on, a vented jacked with my vest over it and of course jeans with chaps over it. It was actually pretty comfortable once we got going. The nice thing was more than once we climb to 12,000 feet and the temp. would drop dramatically. It was nice to have the extra gear with so much fluction in the weather. For a long trip I think the extra gear provides better road and weather protection.
I wear a wicking shirt and a mesh jacket with armor on a hot day and I am definatly much cooler then without it. The wicking shirt is the key. It's almost 80 degrees here in Central NY and I'm start'n to sweat.
At 80 I'm putting on my mesh jacket. Thats Spring weather. I have just been riding with a T-shirt. Might try covering up. I personally frigging hate this weather.

Well, covering your skin to protect it from the sun, keeping the air from evaporating all of your sweat (the bodies cooling mechanism), and creating an air space between the outer layer that the sun and wind hits and your skin, keeps you cooler. The mesh jacket with accomplish that to some extent, it keeps the skin from hitting your shin directly and lets some air in. Once your riding, it's not that bad; but red lights suck...
When I was in Iraq, it's mandatory to sleeves down and most people wear a boonie cap (when not wearing their helmets) to block the sun from their nose, ears, and neck. It keeps you cooler than rolling up the sleeves. Now, when you are wearing all of the battle rattle, it doesn't matter, it's always hot.
