It can be unnerving when they are that close and unpredictable. The wildlife loop was paved this spring and the last 2 times I've been thru there I haven't seen a single buffalo. I'm wondering if they don't like the smell of the fresh asphalt. You usually find their pies on the road but I've only seen a handful. Might try to ride it again this week.
I don't think there is a creature alive that likes that smell.
My one close and personal experience was near Mt. Rushmore.
Myself and another bike were literally surrounded by a fairly large group. One of which was a cow with a calf.
A big bull was just kind of sauntering around paying a lot of attention to us. He got close enough to me that could smell his breath and he sorted and snotted up myself and my gas tank.
We both shut the bikes down, stayed on board and tried to look away from the Bull.
After what seemed like an hour but was probably 10 minutes, the herd started to leave the road.
I told the guy next to me that as soon as it was clear, "I'm hitting the starter and hauling ***, Good luck". He had a female passenger on board.
Had a close encounter a few years ago in Yellowstone, came up upon a couple standing right in the middle of the road, there was a bit RV along side of them that provided a barrier between the buffalo and us. Back in the 80's they use to hand out a flyer warning of the dangers of approaching the big animals and the idiots who ignore the warnings.
Been up close and personal several times in Custer State Park. Always unnerving. Saw many in Yellowstone too, once with the family in a minivan. A big bull decided to rub against the van. I thought it was going to flip!
Custer State Park entry booths can normally tell what part of the park the 🦬 bison are..
Have been to Custer 3 times over the years..
Each time the booths were right on where the bison were..
Some times the bison were on the upper road.

We shut off engine and no sudden movements.
Gal pal thought it was cool at the time. Then years later she saw the insurance commercial where the bull bashes the car.
